Meatballs with Tomato Basil Sauce

Ingredients

Meatballs:
  • Ground beef (1lb | 450 g)
  • Bread crumbs (1/2 cup)
  • Egg (1)
  • Onion, diced (1/2)
  • Garlic, minced (2 cloves)
  • Parmesan, grated (1/2 cup)
  • Oregano, dried (1 tbsp)
  • Salt (2 tsp)
  • Ground pepper (1/2 tsp)

Tomato Basil Sauce:
  • Olive oil (2 tbsp)
  • Onion, chopped (1/2)
  • Garlic, chopped (2 cloves)
  • Crushed canned tomatoes (3 1/2 cups)
  • Tomato paste (2 tbsp)
  • Basil, chopped (1/2 cup)
  • Oregano, dried (1 tbsp)
  • Salt (1 tsp)
  • Ground pepper (1/2 tsp)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F or 200°C.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients and mix using your hand.
  3. Shape the mixture into meatballs and evenly space them on a baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-low heat. Add onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes, then add garlic and sauté for another minute.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer uncovered over low heat for 15 minutes.
  6. Add meatballs to the sauce. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
  7. Serve with egg noodles or spaghetti. Garnish with fresh parsley and parmesan.
